Timing. Sometimes, it is everything. Sometimes you can imagine what it would be. Seeing that good size, healthy brown trout running upstream, booking with great agility, ease and speed around rocks and water foliage. On his way to secure his spawning hole and court a lovely, colorful lady trout. Passing by a crawdad, exposed in the open, the crawdad going about his daily routine in it’s own little world. You imagine the crawdad being relieved that he didn’t just become dinner to fatten up another trout. Not realizing how lucky he was until after the brown trout had already whizzed on by. Grateful that all the trout seem to have only one thing on their mind right now, making time, traveling in the early evening under the blue lit sky. Every creature in it’s own world, with their own needs, their own goals. Existing and surviving, as the day draws near and night falls. The forest and mountains and rivers coming to life. As a bull elk poses proudly on a mountain ridge, saluting it’s kind, profiled with the brightness of a full moon gladly rising behind him. One lone Brook Trout suspended above a rocky river spawning redd. A wondrous view of nature captured at a time when the older and wiser brook trout is making preparations for the creation of bringing younger, new life into the world. The healthy, mature trout knows its mission, setting his stage, all in the attempt of delivering on his expectations. The clean, clear, cool water moves ever so slightly over the protected spawning bed, cleansing it of impurities. Nearby the water plants are swaying along with the current, leaning downstream. The light sandy river shoreline is lit up in the back as the Brookie hovers above the colorful rocks he has prepared. The male brook trout has moved them carefully, picking them up with his mouth or shaking them up with rigorous sweeping of his tail, arranging them meticulously for his display. Placing every rock and pebble just so. His mind on the task at hand and ahead. Guarding his nest from other opportunistic fish that may try to forcefully rush in on what is perceived to be his and land a shot at fertilizing the eggs, when the time arrives. All instincts and senses alert and heightened. A splendid show of readiness. Watching for predators, he is ready to hide nearby if he needs to. Clean. Cool. Refreshing. Water’s presence tends to have a mesmerizing effect on us. With the currents and sunlight leaving wavy colorful ripples across the course. We are drawn to looking in and searching for movement, any form of life where movement would give away it’s hiding place. Looking for outlines or shadows, or a slight difference of color from the surroundings. The powerful magnetism of water draws us in and gives way to our natural tendency to look for fish. Is it there? is that one? Focusing, to see the fish through the slightly reflective water’s surface. We get exciting when we spot it, being very quiet and very, very still so the fish will stay longer. We soak up becoming part of nature, stealing some private time, peaceful. Watching the fish swirl its fins around and around to keep its place, slightly waving its tail. Feeling restful, we are refresh with the simple tranquility. Our thoughts wander, and often, we talk out loud to the fish. Asking how big? Knowing how water changes it’s size, we guess it’s length and weight. Pure Chance? Opportunity? Yes, there are big, mature aggressive smallmouth bass lurking right below the surface, silently waiting or stalking their prey amongst the rocky outcroppings on lake and bass pond shorelines. Right below the paths where mother ducks take their baby ducklings across everyday. Paddling around happily, all fuzzy and sun yellow, leaving baby ripples trailing behind them. Hurrying to catch up with the others, if they fall behind. We love watching wildlife while on vacation or at our favorite bass fishing hole. This attracts our attention. The smallmouth bass might be hungry or he might just be curious. He could have followed the ducklings as they swam over to the perfect spot for the taking or the Smallie could have come up, out of his hole, to see what all the ruckus was about. Instinctively, rushing out to see what was splashing and creating the commotion. Reacting to the presentation, investigating a potential meal. How hungry is the smallmouth bass? Is the opportunity right? Would we talk to the fish, telling him to take it, because what a sight that would be. And then be somewhat shocked, but in awe of the excitement. Or would we tell the fish to hold still, just look, and wish the ducklings would get out of the water, come on little duckling, get out of the water, hurry. Women tend to vote for the ducklings. Men often like to root for the bass to take it, but women are still interested in watching what might happen. It is our fascination with life and death that draws us to these things. That keeps us watching. We’d watch the fight, the explosion of water flying, the struggle. Ducks scattering, smallmouth bass awakening our adrenaline in the rush and strike. Does he do it, does the duckling get away, scrambling to safety. Either way, because we are human, we watch to see how the story unfolds, imagining different outcomes. Mountain lakeshore, where the big fish are known to travel by, teasing the anglers with sightings of big football size “browns.” Tucking themselves away, nestled in rock beds, lying securely in the rocky shoreline amongst the scattered lake reeds. A lucky few fishermen sight them and as they watch them swim by and away, they picture in their minds, the trophy brown trout in it’s place, resting contently in the shallows. Suspended above the pebbled bottom just below the waters surface. As we all do, talking to the fish to stay, just for a time, while we watch him in his own little world, separate from ours. Untouched, undisturbed, unless you count our intrusion. Keeping his place with little fin strokes back and forth. He stays for us to watch, as we wonder where he has come and where he will go when he disappears. He is big, so how much of the lake does he own. We are pleased with our fortune, our time spent with what seems like an old buddy. We know he has experience, knowledge, wisdom, he has survived, and quite well. We are all blessed to know such a beautiful person (and I've heard that she's quite a dancer too, now where did we put those pictures from Kenny's wedding?). She's an ICU Nurse, a new homeowner decorating her home and planting the yard and garden, and has two gorgeous German Shephards, several cats, and one large fish tank. One fish finally went to a larger tank at a pet store because it was over a foot long and out grew the tank. The Bearded dragons have found other homes. Up close, a few lone water lilies, resting peacefully on the mirrored water surface reflecting the mood of the heavens above. Individually, incredible. Moving back to take in more, there are multitudes of them. They are a community with many others and not so alone. Lily after lily spotting the horizon, looking alike, yet each quite different. Tossed across the water like chips that have been thrown about, scattered, falling as they may. Overlapping each other for support, gaining the advantage of resting on another’s will and strength. Pads spread out, sunning themselves, taking in the rays, yielding strong solid flowers that are striking. Rooted deep where eyes don’t see, holding hands at their base in the earth, intertwined. Rising separately on their way to the surface, reaching for the sun, the light, the air, freedom. Growing mightily on healthy waters. This Lily Pond, with it’s gorgeous Water Lilies, a world away and so opposite from our pavement and cement and hard harsh lines of structure. There is something about lily pads and flowers that captures our attention. We often don’t realize what it is about a certain setting that draws us to it. Lilies create an illusion to there not being a water’s edge, with its roots growing from the earth below, where we imagine it’s stems rising to the surface, transcending to prosper at the water’s surface. From farther away we picture the fish swimming and hiding underneath, the frog jumping from pad to pad, the dragonflies and bees humming around busily collecting their pollen and when we’re able to get closer, we hope to see all this and more. You can almost hear the water lilies sigh, exhaling deeply with gratitude. Putting on a magnificent show. Softly vibrant colors with strong, crisp, sturdy petals reaching out and up, like earth stars. Glowing heartily in the sun. A type of warmth that looks like they would snuggle up with you, as a friend, if they could. Or maybe, playfully tickle you and laugh heartily at having made you smile. It calls to us to get closer. Alone in this older house, holding a long history, that has seen a few days put behind. Remembering well, smiling at the memories of all who stood at the base of the old table that came with the house we occupied for almost a century now. To compliment the lone container garden, a potted orchid plant, once single and small itself. Now older, wiser, proven, established. The yellow sunny, golden sun-drenched walls watched the orchid bloom and the blooms disappear. Watching the now elderly caretaker, each year, take it apart on the old table and send the babies on their way, in new pots, as each family and friend requested their own. To be once again placed back in the container garden to prosper, and bloom for another spring. Petals of forgiveness, for all and for myself. I almost didn’t write this story because it can be kind of sad, in a way, but it’s real. It’s part of all of our lives and sometimes sadness makes you stop and think about all that you have to appreciate, be grateful for and are blessed with. That, in itself, is not always easy to do. Then it’s okay to let yourself go ahead and really feel, exactly how you should feel, taking note and acknowledging what is right in front of you demanding attention. Even if you push it away or to the back, it still exists, it is still there inside. Roses aren’t always perfect and they age, they have flaws, they have a time when the heat gets to them or their environment gets to them, and they can start showing their age, around the edges, past their prime. They arrive at a time when they are not at their peak, their perfect being. It might come earlier than it should, and their petals are not plump and perfectly curled and spiraled. Their petals fade, losing them as teardrops dropping, fluttering down to the earth. They start to lose some of their form. So that’s where the holly leaves come in. Roses peak in the summer and are gone in the winter. When we think of Holly leaves, they are strong, distinct, solid green and lush, in the middle of the winter. The many-petal roses are dressed in holly leaves, surrounding itself with support, adorning itself. There comes a time when we are not at our prime, with our fastest speed and form. And we try to decorate and adorn ourselves with objects that will attract attention to what still shines brightly. We are not able to work in the yard as long or spend all weekend painting the house, without it showing. There is a longer recovery time. Our struggles show on our face and there are carved notches in our trust and our innocence, we have shed our own teardrops and lost a few petals. We learned from our mistakes, and find wiser ways to do things. We learn to know what is more important. Season came, we changed. We have to find ways to ask for forgiveness more often, and forgive others as often as we can. And when it’s tough, let others help us out. Like the Holly in the winter, so youthful and new, supporting us, adorning us, holding us up until our last days. Giving us more life by hiding some of our flaws, and making up for what we have lost to time. It is sad at times, but not so sad if you have been all that you can be, each day important and full. With great family and friends that are your “Holly.” I still haven’t decided if I should have written this story for all to see, because it is not done, just like me. Sadness. Support. Forgiveness. Moving naturally, untouched, gliding, smoothly, with ease, moving around obstacles with humor, in harmony. What we’d like to look forward to each day. But our lives often get hectic and stressed, being reminded of everyday realities. We want release, to absorb ourselves in something simple and pure, without a cause or a message or a need, other than for us to look at and ponder, and think about nothing, finding simplicity. We look for reasons to come along to take us away from our unending thoughts and current surroundings. Our peaceful flowing art takes us elsewhere. It is like listening to a moving song, or listening to a good story, or enjoying the aromas of our favorite home baked desserts. We find some quiet, some simple pleasures. Blue waters, swirling gently, always seem to calm and relax us. As their currents swirl and twirl in the sunlight, rippling from center outward or curling in. They mix, and spread, and regroup to continue on it’s path. One of least resistance. Moving fluidly, as part of a much larger mass, flowing onward in an ever-changing path. The sky is much the same, and if we could see the air currents, would we just watch them stream around and on their way. Flowing, moving with subtle forces and ignited by disturbances turning themselves into dancing streams, excited, then calm again. Relaxed by the warmth of the sun’s glow, when winter is away. SEEING THE WORLD AS ART Baslee Troutman I catch myself framing landscapes or scenic scenes as they unfold. Imagining how it would look as a picture, wanting to capture it. Seeing it in pictures that can be designed. Capturing the feeling of the moment, the senses it ignited, the mood it created, with it's colors just right, the light, the symmetrical shapes, the flow, as if a frame could hold the theme in place. A way to remember a place and time, that would never be replicated. In that moment only, the movement, the motion, the time, the tones and color and light. Capturing places that balance you, that take you to that place that centers you. You feel the need, the desire to hold onto what moved you and carry the newly found inspiration. An expression of yourself. Holding time still. To share with others. With those whom matter most to you. Hoping they will see what only exists at that particular moment. Because it wont be replicated, just as it was ever again. Somehow, it would be forever lost if not recorded, at least in somebody's mind. It can be changed, rearranged, blending themes, placing different scenes together, overlaying them, organizing, removing flaws, blending colors, adding components. So you too may travel, where I have, if only in my mind, to see what I see when I close my eyes and wander. Look away and into a better place. Where there are only the rules you create. No demands, no critiques and all that matters is if it is pleasing to look at. Something that you would want to share with others. Seeing the evolution, evoking feelings and emotions, and senses, that take you to a place where you feel centered, where you can breathe better. A place where you can dream and anticipate having the best luck and good fortune. Finding sensations of calmness, wonder, awe, letting you follow your own story, whatever it is that you want to see, your creation.
