Enemies of Art Prints
Paper has a tendency to be fragile and needs to be handled with care. Aging of a print is a natural chemical and biological process. But there are other environmental factors that affect it’s longevity such as pollution, light, heat, humidity, smoke, cooking fumes, dust and air circulation to name a few. Follow these handling and care precautions to prevent your print from showing signs of deterioration from mishandling.

Sunlight and Indoor Lighting
Where you hang your print can have a major impact on its longevity.

Never hang your prints in direct sunlight, regardless of the type of glazing used. The colors of your print can become completely faded out. Exposing prints to direct sunshine or artificial light from bulbs or fluorescent lighting, is one of the worst and most frequent mistakes.

In sunny environments or in areas that are lit with fluorescent lighting, using UV acrylic or glass tol minimize the effects of harmful ultraviolet rays. Do not place lamps too close to art prints. Keep them away from direct heat sources. For example, a 40 watt bulb should be no closer than 18 inches. The bright light and heat given off by the bulbs can damage the print.

Use acrylic plastic glazing to cover your print in the frame, instead of glass because it is lightweight, it causes no condensation and acrylic plastic is offered with ultraviolet light absorbers.

The Difference between Internet Pictures
and the Real Printed Art
Internet pictures are low resolution, usually a highly compressed version of a picture of art. They are set up this way so web pages come up quickly and they will not reproduce well if people with low quality printers to try to replicate the art. The pictures do not represent how beautiful and detailed the giclee prints are on fine art papers and canvas. The on-line pictures lose some of their punch but when seen in person they are breath taking and you will be very pleased when they arrive. Humidity and Heating

Humidity causes molding and discoloration spots. Storing art prints in a basement with high humidity and without air circulation will inevitably cause damage. Humidity also attracts pests like silverfish which can damage your prints.

During winter months, rooms are often overheated and the humidity is too low. Relative humidity should be between 40% and 60%. Having plants in the house that you water will increase the humidity or place bowls with water near heating sources or radiators. Your art works on paper and antique furniture will appreciate it.

Cover your giclee print in the frame with acrylic plastic glazing instead of glass because it is lightweight, it causes no condensation and acrylic plastic is offered with ultraviolet light absorbers.

Bathrooms – If you use art prints as wall decor for your bathrooms, buy lower cost prints and have them covered with acrylic plastic glazing along with having the back of the print sealed so moisture doesn’t touch the print. For many reasons, you should always have good ventilation in areas with high moisture.

Heat and Temperature
Extreme temperature fluctuations cause expansion and contractions of paper and can cause a rippling effect on prints that are not surfaced mounted and protected by glazing

Do not hang an art print over or near heating sources or directly next to or over heating air ducts. Most homes and businesses have each room heated and sometimes in the winter months, over-heated. A permanent humidity below 40 percent will dry out the paper and make them brittle. Museums keep a constant temperature in their exhibition rooms.

Over Fireplace. It is not generally recommended hanging picture art over fireplaces. Before you do, check these item carefully. The heat is directed out towards the room and not flowing upward, there is no smoke particles being released around the fireplace and check for excessive heat next to or above the fireplace. Watch the humidity in the home and hang art prints that have glazing to protect the prints.

Pollution
Indoor pollution that affect art prints are from acids in papers and furniture, carpets, paints, dust and dirt, among many other particulate materials or chemical fumes.

Always have your art prints printed, mounted and stored with high quality papers and canvas. Many papers and materials have acids in them that can cause colors to bleach out and will eventually discolor the paper.

Handling Paper Art Prints
A lot of publications will tell you to not to touch art prints with your hands and wear white cotton gloves. Sounds good, but how many people will have or will use white cotton gloves? So, be aware that the oils and contaminants on your hands will attack the print and cause discoloration and/or fading over time. What you can do is wash your hands thoroughly or put on the light, tightly fitting surgical gloves before handling prints. Whatever you do, do not get fingerprints on the image area of the print, the mount board or the mat.

Always lift the print by opposite corners (for example, top left and bottom right), letting the print gently bow or sag in the middle. Un-mounted prints and posters are vulnerable to crescent moon-shaped creases. Be careful to avoid dents and creases, since these can be very difficult or impossible to remove later

Treat your fine art print as if you were a museum curator. Handle them very carefully, your fine art print will reward you with a long life.

Very important for art collecting – never trim off the borders of the art print. This area is used for handling, it’s the portion you place under the matting or frame so no materials ever touch the actual printed portion, and it’s where you would find or have artist signatures.

Storage Paper Fine Art Prints
Most of us are not storing or saving our prints professionally, we want to frame them and hang them up for show. Occasionally, we will need to store, move or ship them and prints are often damage in storage or transporting them.

Professionals keep them in horizontal metal cabinets, acid-free art folders or art collector boxes which have the necessary depth and protection. Unlike wood cabinets, metal has no chemical emissions.

For home or office storage. To store keep the print in its mounted frame. If you have loose prints, they should never be stored where the face of two prints are in direct contact with each other. Put each giclee art print into a separate folder of acid-free paper and store them in a horizontal position.

You should check the placement of your prints regularly for insects. Wormholes or worm tracks caused by silverfish or other pests will destroy the aesthetic look and financial value of your fine art prints.

Transporting Paper Art Prints
Buying art prints on the internet has become a huge part of decorating homes, offices, businesses. To transport prints requires excellent packaging. Prints should be sent flat whenever possible. If a print has to be rolled and sent in a tube, it should be taken out immediately after it has arrived at its destination.

The fine art print shipping package should be extremely stiff and durable. You can purchase ‘Air Float system folders & boxes’ to store, move or ship art prints professionally. If you have to ship with your own packaging, place the giclee art print flat into separate acid-free folders and protect the corners and margins by fixing against sliding inside the package. Put the folder between two light plastic boards or very stiff card board. Mark the package or box on all sides with Large Red letters ‘FRAGILE, DO NOT BEND.’

Glazing (Acrylic or glass)

Prints should never have any direct contact with the glass or other glazing. Always use a window mat with frame.

Glazing is important to protect the print from various types of damage resulting from sources such as smoke, ozone, cooking fumes and human touch or being abrased.

Should you use normal glass or acrylic glazing? Glass can be less expensive but heavy and will glare unless you get the non-reflective kind or museum quality glass. The non-glare glass is not one hundred percent clear and will make your print look fuzzy and affect the ability to see the details in the print. Many believe that glass with non-glare elements, even museum glass will affect the clearness of the picture.

Some will say that Acrylic plastic (high tech protective panes) are considered by most the best solution. It causes no condensation and acrylic plastic is offered with (UV) ultraviolet light absorbers. These high-tech protective panes provide a crystal-clear cover for your print, along with the added benefit of UV ray shielding. They are half the weight and 4-5 times more impact-resistant than standard framer's glass. In the rare occasion that it does break, acrylic glazing is shatter resistant and therefore much less likely to damage your artwork or cause injury.

Others will say that Glass is best but only if you get the more expensive thin museum glass. Glass is easy to cut, chemically inert, and resistant to scratches. Museum style glass has a transparent, anti-reflective coating that makes it nearly invisible. This is not the old-style frosted glass that was used to reduce glare. Museum glass has a coating similar to what is used on modern camera lenses. The coating minimizes reflections, making the glass very difficult to see. If you've ever seen a print under glass where the glass was almost invisible, you've seen museum glass.

If you live in an area prone to earthquakes or you have a larger size print you may prefer the acrylic glazing.

Cleaning Picture Glazing (acrylic or glass)
Simply dust the frame and protective acrylic glazing with a soft rag or fine duster to remove surface dust. Clean the glazing surface regularly with the proper cleaner. CAUTION - Spray the appropriate cleaner on a soft cloth first not the surface of the framed piece, to avoid pooling and damage to the frame, mat, and art.

To avoid damage to your acrylic glazing, do not use abrasive soaps or any commercial glass cleaner that contains ammonia or alcohol. Wipe the surface gently with a slightly moist sponge or soft rag. Dry with a soft, lint-free rag. Do not wet or clean the print directly. With a minimum of care, your custom-framed art print will provide you with a rewarding viewing experience for many years to come.

Mounting & Matting Pictures
RECOMMENDATION: It is recommended by many against purchasing un-mounted fine art prints if your intent is to hang and show your art. Have them professionally dry mounted and matted with archival quality, acid-free materials.

Use only 100% acid free mounting and matting materials.

Be sure the mat separates the print from the glazing. Prints should never come in contact with or touch the glazing. You can use a 4-ply mat for prints up to 16" x 20" prints or use an 8-ply or double mat for larger prints to protect them from bowing and accidentally touching the glazing.

Larger prints need more stiffness support to keep them from bowing in the middle over time and touching the glazing. You can always use an extra layer of 100% acid free foam core attached to the back of the mount board on prints larger than 16 inch x 20 inch.

Use of tapes to fix print. Art galleries, dealers and framers may use special adhesive tapes, called archival tapes, to fix the print to the mat. This is not damaging to your print, but it may dry out within several years and possibly shift or fall off. Avoid using tapes if at all possible.

Art Print Mounting
One type of art print mounting is to attach the print to the mount board using a press and an adhesive which covers the entire back of the image. The main advantage of this type of mounting is that the print stays absolutely flat, even during temperature and humidity changes. This prevents the image from touching the glazing (glass or acrylic in front) which can damage the print. Another advantage is that it makes the print much less likely to be damaged by improper handling since the mounting board itself can be handled without even touching the print. The main disadvantage of this method for museums and some collectors is that the print can not be removed from the mount board for more compact storage.

Custom Conservation Mounting
Conservation mounting is favored by museums and art print collectors. The print is held to the mount board using "T-hinges" in a couple of places along the top edge of the art print. The print freely hangs under its own weight between the mount board and the mat. The advantage is that you can remove the print from the mount board without damage if you want to store it or change the size of mounting or matting. WARNING - The main disadvantage for everyday display is that the print will expand and contract and may accumulate some waviness or bowing after a period of time. This is particularly true for larger prints. When that occurs, the print could touch the glazing (glass or plexiglass) which could damage the print.

Frameless Mounting
For a modern look, prints can be mounted to foam boards and trimmed full-bleed (right to the edge of the image) with no mat or frame. The foam board is then usually attached to the wall with velcro. This style of mounting is seen in some offices and sometimes in homes. With this type of mounting, you may also want to consider a laminate to protect the image from fingerprints and to simplify cleaning.

Framing Pictures
Select a frame that has sufficient strength to support the size of the image and the type of glazing selected. If glass glazing is used, the frame needs to be more substantial.

Lighting Pictures
Room or special lighting can enhance the viewing experience. Make every attempt to keep the amount of light even across the entire image. But, if that's not possible, make sure the center of the image is well lit. Enjoy your prints, but turn the lights off at night or when you are not in the room. Your print will last longer and you'll save energy!

Hanging Giclee Fine Art Print
Always use picture hangers for strength and security. We recommend using two hangers per picture for strength, security, and maintaining straight placement.

To hang the picture at your chosen height you will need to measure how far from the top of the picture the hanging wire will hit when hanging on a nail. If the top of your picture should hang 72 inch from the floor, and the hanging wire hits 4 inches below, your nail will have to be 68 inch from the floor centered with your picture. (Use a light pencil mark on your wall.)

To hang heavy or oversized artwork, up to 150 lbs, in drywall, it is recommended using 2 hangers (75 lb.) on the wall. Two strap-hangers (or D- Rings) should be attached to the artwork with no wire. Strap hangers hook directly onto hangers in the wall. Weight is distributed between the hangers.

To hang art in boats, mobile homes, or for commercial use, use security hangers that anchor all corners of the frame.

Cleaning and Caring for CANVAS Art
Check with the printer that you purchased your giclee art canvas print from, they will have specific cleaning instructions. Many but not all canvas transfer surfaces may be cleaned occasionally with a very slightly dampened sponge, dabbing the surface gently. Do not use cleaning agents or soap, which may cause damage. Transfers are vulnerable to heat and could be ruined or fade through different types of heat exposure. Your canvas transfer should not be placed in direct sunlight, which will cause fading over time.

If cared for properly, a work of canvas art will yield a lifetime of richly textured beauty, vivid colors and fantastic detail. To ensure your canvas art remains as beautiful as the first day it arrived, the following care and cleaning tips are recommended:
 
Do not lean the image against anything — doing so may cause stretching or puckering of the canvas.
 
If you notice a dust buildup on your canvas work of art, you can lightly dust it with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. Electrostatic dust cloths and feather dusters also work well. You shouldn’t need to dust more than once every few years.
 
Never, ever use water to clean your canvas artwork. Water droplets may bead and permanently damage the canvas.
 
Do not use solvents or cleaners of any kind on your canvas art print.
 
When carrying canvas art, it’s best to hold the artwork by the frame or the outer edge of the stretcher bars. If you loop your fingers under the stretcher bars, you may inadvertently "stretch" the painting away from the stretcher.

Hang your canvas art in an area with moderate temperature and humidity levels.
 
Extreme heat, cold, humidity, temperature fluctuations and poor air circulation may damage your artwork or cause it to warp.
 
Avoid hanging your canvas art in direct sunlight. Giclee prints use only the highest-quality fade-resistant inks, but when exposed to direct sunlight they will fade over time.

General Care for CANVAS Giclee art prints
When stretching canvas prints, do not steam the back of the canvas to remove wrinkles. This can cause your image to turn yellow and if not properly dried, will allow fungus to grow. When stretching your canvas print, use rounded stretcher bars and reduce the amount of tension by 10% to 20%, depending on the relative humidity and temperature. This should reduce any sagging of the print in the future. Changes in relative humidity and temperature can cause sagging, even to the originals. Always clean your canvas print with a dry, lint free cloth or very soft brush. Never use a wet or moist cloth to clean your giclee canvas art print.

Storage for Canvas Giclee art prints
Store your canvas or paper art print in an environment that is controlled for both humidity and temperature. Ideally the temperature would be 70 degrees with 55% humidity. High humidity can cause what is called yellow blooming. Keep all Giclée prints away from solvent-based materials such as oil paints and linseed oil, as these vapors can also cause yellowing.

Store your stretched pieces upright, not stacked, and all prints should be interleaved with acid free paper dividers and never stored with any weight on top of them. Avoid letting tape come in contact with the coated print, this can cause it to peel. Taking extra care of your art print initially, will allow you to enjoy your fine art for many years.

If you are storing a canvas artwork, do not lean the art print image against anything – this will cause stretching or puckering of the canvas.

Caring for Giclee Prints on Canvas
Keep the canvas print out of bright or direct sunlight. Direct sunlight will fade any surface over time. The varnish coating provides excellent protection but handle the print with care.

If you notice a dust buildup on your canvas work of art, you can lightly dust it with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. Electrostatic dust cloths and fine feather dusters also work well. You shouldn’t need to dust more than once every few years.

If the canvas surface becomes dirty or stained, it is said that you can wipe it with a soft cloth. If the surface becomes dusty, use a very soft hair brush or fine feather duster.

Never fold or crease the print. This could crack the print surface.

Stretching
CANVAS ART

We suggest you check with your framer to make sure they are familiar with stretching canvas Giclées. This product should not be stretched to the same tension as a traditional canvas to be painted on. Overstretching may cause separation of the coating from the base in extreme cases. Even though the canvas is water-resistant, it is not recommended to use the practice of spraying the back of the canvas with a mist of water to encourage tension. Framed properly there should be no need for this.

When stretching canvas prints, do not steam the back of the canvas to remove wrinkles. This can cause your image to turn yellow and if not properly dried, will allow fungus to grow. When stretching your canvas print, use rounded stretcher bars and reduce the amount of tension by 10% to 20%, depending on the relative humidity and temperature.
