FLOWER SYMBOLISM – What do they Mean? With many plants blooming for only a few weeks, most often in spring or summer, individual flowers tend to be short-lived. Flowers have a birth, and mature into delicate, colorful, and scented beings, and then start their decline until they vanish as quickly as they came. From these qualities emerge the symbolic meanings of flowers representing life and death, and all in between. Iris Symbolism – What does it Mean? The fleur-de-lis, a designed stylized iris, came from the white iris which is native to Florence and Italy. It even grew in its city walls. This white iris is placed on top of a red background and originally became the symbol of Florence. It was changed when the Medici family wanted to show a change in political power, so they reversed the red and white colors, making the white iris red with a white background. This drove them to trying to develop a red iris for many centuries, without complete success. Catherine de Medici carried the changed symbol of Florence to Paris when she married the king of France, where the irises obtained it’s famous name, fleur-de-lis. The Iris is used in symbols including on the Quebec flag, the logo for the New Orleans Saints professional football team, and on the Saint Louis, Missouri flag. SEEING THE WORLD AS ART Baslee Troutman – Flower, Garden, Landscape, Fish and Wildlife Artist I catch myself framing landscape or scenic scenes as they unfold. Imagining how it would look as a picture, wanting to capture it. Seeing it in pictures that can be designed. Capturing the feeling of the moment, the senses it ignited, the mood it created, with it’s colors just right, the light, the symetrics, the flow, as if a frame could hold the theme in place. A way to remember a place and time, that would never be replicated. In that moment only, the movement, the motion, the time, the tones and color and light. In that combination, needs to be kept and captures, and expressed. Holding time still. To share with others. Hoping they will see what only exists at that particular moment. Because it wont be replicated, just as it was ever again. Somehow, it would be forever lost if not recorded, at least in somebody’s mind. It can be changed, rearranged, blending themes, placing different scenes together, overlaying them, organizing, removing flaws, blending colors, adding components. Taking the original and creating what has never been seen together before. A new Original. Only in your mind as it is created, thought by thought, stroke by stroke. So you too may have traveled, where I have, if only in my mind, what I see when I close my eyes and wander. Away from the realness of daily activities, beyond any harshness or sharp lines, outside of the structure, never minding the common practices, forbidding approved procedures and processes. Where there are only the rules you create. No demands, no critiques and all that matters is if it is pleasing to look at. Does it evoke feelings and emotions, and senses that take you to a better place, does it let you dream and anticipate having the best luck and good fortune. Does it bring sensations of calmness, wonder, awe, letting you enter into and follow your own story, whatever it is that you want to see, to create. And follow that path more than once, letting you change the ending or the meaning until it is what you’d like it to be. Close your eyes and believe.
