Water Lily Species There are about 70 different species of water lilies that are grouped into three kinds – Hardy, Tropical and night. Hardy water lilies grow in all conditions and are commonly seen in waterways. Water Lilies, Lotuses, Pond Lilies Nympheus Water lily is the common name for some members of the Nymphaeaceae family. This freshwater plant family includes water lilies, lotuses and pond lilies, which are called cow lilies and spatterdocks. They grow from rhizome roots in mucky or silty sediments in water up to 6-7 feet in depth. It prefers the quiet waters of ponds, around lake edges and slower moving streams or riversides. Lilies do well in acidic or alkaline waters. The water lily leaves and stalks usually have six petals and six stamen. They reproduced by budding and growing seeds and by the rhizome roots spreading. Water lilies send long stems up to the water surface where the lily pads and captivating flowers float on top of the water. One plant structure can grow to about 15 feet wide and take over an entire small lake in 5 years or so, if not cultivated or removed. |

Native American Uses – EDIBLE, MEDICINE The fragrant water lily was put to use by Native Americans in the eastern states. Roots of the water lilies were used as medicine to create a poultice for sores and tumors and taken internally for digestive ailments, and used as a rinse to heal mouth sores. Leaves and flowers were used as cooling compresses. Rhizomes could be used for food. Baby leaves could be eaten as a vegetable. Seeds were fried and eaten and ground into flour. |

Growth Habit - Don’t Plant in Lakes Water lilies grow in dense patches which can create stagnant areas with low oxygen levels underneath the many floating lily pads. These multiple pads can make it difficult for fish to swim but definitely can create entire lakes where you cannot water ski, swim, use a boat, row a boat or even paddle a canoe through because they are so thick and dense. Shallow lake shorelines will eventually be taken over by water lilies. It is strongly discouraged from planting non-native fragrance water lilies in lakes because they are aggressive plant that can transplant other unwanted plants with them when they are brought in. |

SHELTER FOR FISH – in Moderation Fragrant water lilies can provide shelter and habitat for fish, invertebrates and provide shade to cool the water in bass or trout ponds, lakes, streams or riverside, if they only grow in moderation. If the area is taken over with too many leaves covering the top of the water surface, it will stagnate the water and lower it’s oxygen content. |

Male & Female - Timing, magic & trickery Water lilies reproduce by seed or by new plants sprouting from their large spreading roots. These underground rooting stems are called rhizomes. A planted rhizome will cover around a 15-foot diameter area in five years. Each pink or white fragrant water lily has many petals surrounding both male and female reproductive parts, that open to pollinate for only 3-5 days during daylight hours. The flowers produce a fluid in the cup-like center which make them receptive to pollen from other flowers. They are not releasing their own pollen yet. Insects are attracted to the flower by it’s fragrance which is present when it is whiter, so they can be better seen. The insects are covered with pollen and when they go into the flower, they fall in the fluid in the pool. The fluid washes the pollen off the insect’s bodies onto the stigmas (female flower parts), fertilizing the flower. The insects try to escape the flower by crawling out of the fluid but the flower closes on them at the end of the day. Sometimes they are trapped. The fragrance goes away, and the flowers turn pinker. The next day or so the fluid dries up and the flower produces pollen from the stamens (yellow stick shaped structures at the flowers center). The insects pick up that pollen and transport it from that flower to other flowers that are attracting them by their white flowers and fragrance. This cycle repeats itself over and over again. They cannot self-pollinate. Once and for all, the water lily flowers closed for the final time, they coil (spiral) their stalks and bring the fruit of the flowers underwater. The seeds mature under water. Several weeks later they are released into the water. Water currents, birds and ducks that eat the seeds, spread water lilies to other areas. Lots of seeds are produced. This cycle continues throughout the summer months. Each spring around April, new water lily shoots appear at the rhizome roots and grow up through the water reaching for the surface. The flowers will bloom for pollination from June to September. Each water lily flower blossom opens in the morning and closes in the early afternoon for a few consecutive days. They repeat this cycle over and over again. |

TRYING TO REMOVE – Hard to Control Water lilies reproduce by seeds and by spreading by rhizome roots. They are hard to control or curtail from growing in unwanted places, once they take root. Pieces of the rhizome root will replant itself wherever it lands, if you break them apart trying to get rid of them. They will drift to other areas and grow a new patch of lilies. |

Managing them Successfully Water lilies can be controlled by cutting, harvesting, covering the bottom with barrier materials, and using aquatic herbicides. To rid lakes and ponds of overgrown water lilies, you will need to be very persistent in picking off the leaves every few days while they emerge for several seasons. This may eventually kill the plants if you keep doing it. |

Control through Herbicides or Cultivation There are several herbicides that can be used that are water based or applied to the leaves. Before trying to get rid of lilies, do you research on using herbicides and get a permit is required before applying it to waterways. You can try to control water lilies in specific areas such as swimming areas or around docks by covering the sediment with a opaque fabric which blocks light from the plants . This is called bottom screening and basically what you are doing is blocking the sunlight from reaching the plant roots. |

HAPPY WATER LILY OPENING HAPPY WATER LILIES OPENING Up close, a few lone water lilies, resting peacefully on the mirrored water surface reflecting the mood of the heavens above. Individually, incredible. Moving back to take in more, there are multitudes of them. They are a community with many others and not so alone. Lily after lily spotting the horizon, looking alike, yet each quite different. Tossed across the water like chips that have been thrown about, scattered, falling as they may. Overlapping each other for support, gaining the advantage of resting on another’s will and strength. Pads spread out, sunning themselves, taking in the rays, yielding strong solid flowers that are striking. Rooted deep where eyes don’t see, holding hands at their base in the earth, intertwined. Rising separately on their way to the surface, reaching for the sun, the light, the air, freedom. Growing mightily on healthy waters. This Lily Pond, with it’s gorgeous Water Lilies, a world away and so opposite from our pavement and cement and hard harsh lines of structure. There is something about lily pads and flowers that captures our attention. We often don’t realize what it is about a certain setting that draws us to it. Lilies create an illusion to there not being a water’s edge, with its roots growing from the earth below, where we imagine it’s stems rising to the surface, transcending to prosper at the water’s surface. From farther away we picture the fish swimming and hiding underneath, the frog jumping from pad to pad, the dragonflies and bees humming around busily collecting their pollen and when we’re able to get closer, we hope to see all this and more. You can almost hear the water lilies sigh, exhaling deeply with gratitude. Putting on a magnificent show. Softly vibrant colors with strong, crisp, sturdy petals reaching out and up, like earth stars. Glowing heartily in the sun. A type of warmth that looks like they would snuggle up with you, as a friend, if they could. Or maybe, playfully tickle you and laugh heartily at having made you smile. It calls to us to get closer. And then we see, the fish underneath the lily pads, hiding from predators, thankful for the shade, or perhaps waiting for an unsuspecting frog or insect to come on by. Plentiful. Frogs are tucked in and hiding between the leaves sleeping, or waiting quietly for their next meal to fly by. Others are jumping from pad to pad, are they on their way somewhere or doing what they do just for fun, as a game being played like kids in a playground. SEEING THE WORLD AS ART Baslee Troutman – Flower, Garden, Landscape, Fish and Wildlife Artist I catch myself framing landscape or scenic scenes as they unfold. Imagining how it would look as a picture, wanting to capture it. Seeing it in pictures that can be designed. Capturing the feeling of the moment, the senses it ignited, the mood it created, with it’s colors just right, the light, the symetrics, the flow, as if a frame could hold the theme in place. A way to remember a place and time, that would never be replicated. In that moment only, the movement, the motion, the time, the tones and color and light. In that combination, needs to be kept and captures, and expressed. Holding time still. To share with others. Hoping they will see what only exists at that particular moment. Because it wont be replicated, just as it was ever again. Somehow, it would be forever lost if not recorded, at least in somebody’s mind. It can be changed, rearranged, blending themes, placing different scenes together, overlaying them, organizing, removing flaws, blending colors, adding components. Taking the original and creating what has never been seen together before. A new Original. Only in your mind as it is created, thought by thought, stroke by stroke. So you too may have traveled, where I have, if only in my mind, what I see when I close my eyes and wander. Away from the realness of daily activities, beyond any harshness or sharp lines, outside of the structure, never minding the common practices, forbidding approved procedures and processes. Where there are only the rules you create. No demands, no critiques and all that matters is if it is pleasing to look at. Does it evoke feelings and emotions, and senses that take you to a better place, does it let you dream and anticipate having the best luck and good fortune. Does it bring sensations of calmness, wonder, awe, letting you enter into and follow your own story, whatever it is that you want to see, to create. And follow that path more than once, letting you change the ending or the meaning until it is what you’d like it to be. Close your eyes and believe.
