OUTFISHING A BUDDY
As the sunset turns the sky many shades of pink, orange and purple, almost glowing red, there is time for a few last casts. You’re bouncing your soft plastic worm with a small jig tip, slowly across the rocky bottom. Stopping, feeling, watching, waiting to catch the last big one of the day, this is the one that puts you with the most fish caught for the day. But who’s counting, right. You’re feeling it bump across the bottom, hitting everything in its path, hoping to bounce it right over the wood structures in the way.
Then it stops, you wait in anticipation, silently yelling – take it, take it, take it, one last time. It begins to pull back, the line tightens, it starts moving sideways, come on a little bit more, just a little bit. You know it’s a big mean hard-fighting smallmouth bass. You don’t want to miss it, you don’t want to yank back too soon. Waiting for the perfect timing. The rod end starts to show tension, bending ever so slightly, it’s pulling back. You hook it firmly, your rod bends, your drag squeals and the fight is on. This is the catch that gives you the title of out-fishing your buddy. |
ARE THEY NATIVE? OR ARE THEY INTRODUCED?
Smallmouth bass are part of the black bass species and is a very popular gamefish loved by freshwater sport fishing anglers throughout North America. Smallies have been stocked in many clear, cool-water rivers and lakes in the United States and Canada.
During the mid-to-late 1800’s, smallmouth were transplanted by the nation's railroad in buckets and barrels to lakes and rivers throughout the northern and western United States, even as far away as California. They are a hardy species and shipped well.
As waterways because warmer, more acidic and have silt in the water which depletes the oxygen, trout die but smallmouth bass have been successfully introduced to replace them as sports fish. |

WATER & Temperature
Smallmouth Bass Rivers, Lakes, Streams, Ponds
Smallmouth bass are found in clearer water than the largemouth, especially streams, rivers, and rocky areas or by stumps and in sandy bottoms of lakes and reservoirs. The smallmouth prefers cooler water temperatures than largemouth bass. You can find them abundantly in both still and moving water.
Their preferred water temperature from 66-70 degrees F. Smallmouth bass don’t like waters with temperatures that consistently exceed above 85 degrees F. If the water temperature exceeds 90 degrees F, it can be lethal. Smallmouth bass also need a great amount of DO (dissolved oxygen), a dependable stream flow and areas of shade. |
Healthy Smallmouth – Pollution Hazard
Smallmouth Bass are not as tolerant of pollution, so it is a good indicator of an healthy aquatic environment. Luckily it can adjust better to changes in water condition than most trout species. |
BASS Tournaments – Respect for Bass treatment
Smallmouth bass caught in today’s bass fishing competitions, are placed in live wells. They are released as soon as they are weighted by officials. Bass competitors are penalized for any dead fish and sometimes, depending on the tournament rules, they are not weighed in. Fish turned in for weighing are either immediately released or placed in tanks with solutions that treat them for stress and scale/slime coat injury, and they are released back into the water. |

FINDING THEM?
Smallmouth bass prefer clear, clean water and prefer areas with gravel, sandy or rocky bottoms. They live in small to mid-size rivers and streams that have deep pools with plenty of shade. Or in fairly deep, clear lakes and reservoirs that have steep drop-offs, undercuts or weed beds vegetation.
Even though they can adapt to different types of water, it’s unlikely you’ll find them in abundance where there is always murky water or muddy flood waters. They like rivers with strong currents but will live in areas just outside the main current. When temperatures rise, they retreat to cover, deep holes, into crevices, around rocks or shady cover. They don’t like bright, hot sunshine but can be coaxed out to strike bait.
Smallmouth bass don’t travel far away from their designated holes or cover. Their home range usually extends for only a few hundreds yards, with structures, holes or crevices serving as hiding places. When it gets cold, they will become less active and seek cover. |
TOO MANY BASS – OVERPOPULATION
Sometimes for a combination of reasons including ‘catch and release’ practices, smallmouth bass will overpopulate a waterway. You can tell an area is overpopulated because the bass’ growth is stunted. There are indications that point to overpopulation, such as if all the fish are less than 1 pound and look skinny, other fish are larger and too big to eat or all the fish at 1 year old are only 4-5 inches long. This overpopulation can be caused by not enough bass being taken or eaten or the bass not having enough food. |

SPAWNING – Males protect nest & fry
Smallmouth bass start spawning in spring time about the middle of May through the end of June. Spawning begins when water temperatures rise to between 60-65 degrees F.
Males select the spawning site and build the nests in water anywhere from 1 to 12 feet deep depending on water clarity and nearby habitat. With his tail, he will sweep out a circular shaped nest about twice the size of the length of it’s body or often around 3 ft wide. They like gravel beds near cover such as a log, boulder or undercropping, near shore or downstream from any type of obstruction or where deep holes are nearby. They have to have a place to retreat if in danger. He will aggressively defend the nest from other predators including other male and female smallmouth bass.
The female changes color when she is ready to spawn with dark colors on her body becoming more noticeable. When a smallmouth female enters the male's territory, they do a rubbing dance which includes some biting. The male must courts the female, persuading her to deposit eggs in his nest.
With both smallmouth in the nest, they lay side by side, shaking together and release both the sperm and eggs at the same time in spurts for up to several hours. The female can lay thousands of eggs. After spawning is complete, she either leaves or is chased off and may mate again with another male.
It’s the male’s job to guard the nest and fry for a few days. The male smallmouth bass with fan the nest to prevent silt from depositing and to remove metabolic wastes. This also insures better DO (dissolved oxygen) levels. The embryos hatch in about 7 days and they continue to develop for another week before leaving the nest to pursue food. The fry is dark in color and eat micro crustaceans. As they grow larger, they eat insects, fish and other mammals if opportunity arises. |

GOOD FIGHTING SMALLMOUTH BASS
Black Bass (smallies) are the most loved freshwater sport gamefish because of their aggressive, bone-jarring strikes and the way they dance across the top of the water trying to shake the hook during the fight.
Smallmouth bass are predators that actively feed on a large variety of creatures so you can interest them in striking with many different types of bait. Whether it’s natural bait or artificial, they will strike plastic worms and grubs, frogs, crawdad, surface poppers, spoons, spinners, crank baits and plugs. Or you can catch them on natural worms, crayfish, insects or live minnows. Fly fisherman can use a variety of other artificial baits.
As water temperatures start climbing in the spring, above 50 F., bass start to feed aggressively. As upper water layers warm, bass typically go deeper to cooler waters but come out to be aggressive eaters. In the summer, bass only come to the surface to feed. They will do this generally before dawn and after dusk but they will feed on the surface anytime their food is present and they are hungry. |

Hearty Eaters – Top Predators
Smallmouth bass are carnivorous, visual predators with voracious appetites. They are quick acting by striking anything that resembles a meal. This is why they require clean, clear waters to survive. Once they see it, they are quite successful in capturing and eating it. They are the top predatory fish where they are located.
Its diet is comprised of crayfish, worms, insects, smaller fish, frogs, tadpoles, lizards, small birds and mammals that venture into the water including snakes, mice and it is said that some have seen them swallow up baby ducklings. Crayfish live in the rocky areas and become a main course quite often.
They eat less often when it is cold and they are more inactive, especially as it gets closer to 40 degrees F, when they stop feeding. They may feed all year if food is scarce. Feeding heartily begins in the spring when water temperatures are over 47 degrees F and increases as it reaches around 80 degrees F. .
Fry and juvenile bass will mostly feed on small zooplankton and insect larvae. Adults smallmouth bass will also cannibalize the young of other smallmouth. There are some birds such as the osprey that will eat bass. |

Identifying – What makes it a Smallmouth?
The smallmouth bass is longer than it is thick. It’s has a elongated body with a broad, slightly forked tail with reddish eyes.
The smallmouth bass is mostly green to olive green on the back and fades to brown and golden brown on the sides with dark vertical bands rather than a horizontal band along the side. They have golden and white belly colors. There are about 13-15 soft ray lines in the dorsal fin.
You can distinguish the smallmouth bass from Largemouth Bass, by its jaw bone. The smallmouth bass derives its name from the fact that its upper jaw does not extend beyond the back of its eye. Largemouth bass are also primarily greenish in color. |
How Big? Life Span? Smallmouth Bass
Smallmouth bass will become mature at 3-4 years. They can live on average to 7 to 12 years old. They can become 13-20 years old but very few live that long. Most smallmouth we see are about 8-15 inches long and weigh less than three pounds. Males and female grow at about the same rate and to the same size. |

BASS FISHING as a Sport

They will prosper where there is sufficient water quality and food. Largemouth bass are famous for their big size, pulling and making quick powerful runs when hooked, and then heading straight to some structure or weedbed to break or hold the line. This Year More Than Ever
Chosing the Right Personal Gift
is more important than ever.
Art’s purpose is to gratify us and satisfy our needs and desires. We not only need to express ourselves by decorating our homes and offices to create environments that are pleasing to us but we want to proudly show and share with others who we are and what’s important to us. It’s gratifying to us, and we anticipate the enjoyment others will receive and the attention our art will get by others as they find themselves taken in by the colors, the tone, the mood, the story.
You have great flexibility in choosing art that is attractive for it’s impact, expressing a point of view, the quality or style. We all want to belong and experience a connection with the thoughts and ideas that the art work presents, and have others join with us. It is very personal, the relationship that develops between a person and the art. We are attracted to scenes and settings that we can relate to, understanding the meaning and appreciate that we can identify with the art and the artist.
Art allows us to create, give and receive attention. All of us open ourselves to receiving compliments on our choices and can find it fulfilling that we own art that is fresh, real and unique. That becomes part of us and represents us. We can feel good when whenever we view it, comfortable with it’s statement, value, importance and significance. We commit to the art we buy and look forward to the rewards that it will bring us.

Baslee Troutman Fish Art Collection
THE ARTIST and FISHING
There’s a Fish! LOOK, right there. Do you see it? It’s a Brook Trout!
Anglers, like those I know including myself, have this unending need to scan the water to see if any fish can be spotted. You approach the water’s edge quietly, trying not to slip or make too much noise, scanning down into the water. Looking for shapes or differences in color or shadows that could be a fish, watching for any movements. The sun’s rays spreading wavy reflection across the top, making it a little more difficult to see. The wind or waves making their ripples that distort having a clear view. .
But you look, and look, and then you spot it. You want to show your find off, so you invite them to come look because it’s always much better if you can share your sighting with another person. But be quiet, don’t spook the fish. Look right, there, can you see it? It’s got to be a fish, right. You want them to see it too, if not to verify it’s truly a fish, to share this stolen moment where you get to be part of something so natural, wild, refreshing. This is serene excitement.
Sometimes you only get to see it for a second or two, as they quickly dart for cover because you’ve been spotted or someone comes rambling down to the shore or throw rocks into the water. But other times, they are there, definitely there, and you want them to stay around until you’ve had your fill. Now someone has to identify the fish, and then you start announcing their size. These are perfect times, and you wish that you could spend more time away, like this.
Once a fish has been spotted, fishing stories come easily about previous catches, or fun times spent with family and friends. Seeing fish or meeting up with another person that fishes, invokes a clear need to share and tell others about fishing outings and adventures, or great catches or humorous mishaps. It creates a common bond or thread that ties us all together. Fishermen and their friends can relate to the story, even if they have nothing else in common.
The telling of the weather, the water condition, the preparation to get there, the wait, the catch, the trials and errors, landing the King, losing the big one, missing the hardest strike, limiting out, out-fishing your buddy and describing the fish in detail along with every run made making your reel squeal or reeling in while it bent your pole almost in half, the fight with the head shaking, top water surface dancing, trying to wrap you around structure, the exhilarating, adrenaline rushing fight. The fish being an admirable opponent, as we try to tame and conquer it.
Close your eyes and believe.
Baslee Troutman wishing you healthy, happy and prosperous travels. |
