ARE THEY NATIVE? OR ARE THEY INTRODUCED?
Rainbow trout are native to western North America from the Aleutian Islands to northern Mexico, but have been widely introduced to lakes, rivers and streams throughout North America and the rest of the world..
In North America, steelhead are found in Pacific Ocean rivers, steams and tributaries from southern California up to Alaska. They are also found in Asia, from the east and west coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula, and a few found on the mainland. California and Oregon steelhead have populations in the coastal rivers and streams. |

Rainbow Trout or Steelhead?
Rainbow trout and steelhead are the same species of fish. They have two different names that distinguishes them from each other, by life-style only. Rainbow trout are non-anadromous, so they do not leave the stream to go to the ocean and spend their entire life in the stream. Steelhead are anadromous. There is a close genetic relationship between the two. Steelhead can turn into non-anadromous fish if rivers and streams are damned or if there is not enough water to migrate, during drought periods. On the other hand, resident trout populations can also become anadromous if they are presented with the opportunity to go to the ocean. Off-spring born to either, can be non-anadromous and anadromous.. |

HABITAT in Trout Rivers, Streams, Creeks, Lakes
Steelhead trout are a good indicator of entire aquatic system’s health because they use all portions of streams and rivers. They require cool, clean water. They like water temperatures between 53-57 degrees F. Steelhead have many of the same ecological requirements and life cycles as some Pacific salmon.
Steelhead habitat requirements can change during their lives. Adult steelhead need access to the stream they were hatched in order to spawn. Besides this access to the upper stream areas they need the right size spawning gravel or pebbles. The water has to be cool and clean without a lot of sediment or silt in the substrate. Water velocity and flow is also very important to keep the spawning areas clear. Along with having the right size rocks, there has to be nearby cover for them to hide in when threatened and to stay cool. Undercuts, logs, root wads, woody debris, large boulders or deep pools work well. |

Water with high Dissolved Oxygen & Cool
Steelhead eggs, alevins (pre-emergent fry) and fry absolutely need cool water with adequate dissolved oxygen. Too much sediment or silt will choke out and kill the developing eggs. Juvenile steelhead will typically be found in shallow areas around 2 feet deep with rock bottoms. They will stay where there is sufficient water velocity, cover from white water riffles and other forms of covers from rocks, channels, wood structures or deep pools.
Cool, clean water is necessary for steelhead survival. High water temperatures above 70 degrees F, will harm the fish, their growth rate and ability to feed. The warmer water has less dissolved oxygen, making the fish weak and prone to disease. |

Where have ALL the STEELHEAD GONE?
Steelhead populations have been greatly reduced. They are listed as a threatened species. They were once abundant in California and Oregon coastal and central valley rivers and streams. The main reason steelhead populations have declined is the loss of good, natural freshwater habitat untouched by people. We have seriously harmed their numbers and ability to spawn by causing inadequate stream flows, blocking their access to spawning grounds and polluting the waters with wastes and heavy sediments. |

Steelhead Runs
Steelhead have an exciting, extraordinary and dangerous life. Every spring thousands of smolt, around 6 inches or so, leave or are washed down the streams and rivers on their journey to the ocean. Steelhead have a high mortality rate and many never return to spawn as an adult. They travel hundred of miles away. When they do return, years later, they come as early as July and are part of the "summer" steelhead runs. Steelhead that return to spawn in August, September and October are part of the "Fall" run. In some places there are "Spring" runs with steelhead coming up the river in April, May and June. Often, you will find bright, dime bright Silvers mixed in with the spawners that look like rainbow trout. The spawners have spent the winter waiting for the spring spawning season.
Spawning starts around mid-April and goes through May and early June. A male can spawn with several females. More males will die than females during spawning. After spawning, spent steelhead, will slowly move back to the sea. |

WHAT’S GOING TO HAPPEN NEXT?
"These giclee fine art prints will show your appreciation for exceptional art that represents well-being and a world at peace while others will pique your curiosity of what’s going to happen next. You get to tell the story - the beginning, middle and ending is yours to tell. You’ll find yourself smiling and feeling well when you let everything else go from your busy mind, and just look into the story, traveling there, letting yourself be there, sharing a moment with nature, letting yourself enjoy god’s wonderful creations."
We don’t get to spend everyday out in the scenic natural greenways connecting with what is an amazing masterpiece. Only on occasional Weekends and Vacations. But we need what it does for us, everyday. We long for it. We’re drawn to both the gentleness and forcefulness of the open sky, the water, the symmetrical yet wild growth of plants and trees, the animals and fish going about their day that allow us to believe that we are not intruders, but we belong and are part of, even if only for a few minutes. Trout, Brown Trout, Brook Trout, Smallmouth Bass Stories.

You plan your fishing trips in detail, you hunt long and hard, high and low for the best fishing tackle and gear, you research the perfect fishing spots and talk others into giving you directions to "the secret fishing hole," you watch the weather, read the fishing reports and dream of fishing while you’re at work. It represents the trophy catch, the one you want to custom frame and proudly to show off to your family and friends. Whether you’re at work or at home, these fine art giclee prints will take you back to the relaxing times you spent hanging out at the river, lakes or ponds looking into the water to see the trout, steelhead, salmon, or bass in their natural environment – or those exciting times you spent in the boat or on the shore tracking, chasing down, and reeling in the catch-of-the-day.
So stop clicking around for a moment, and spend some time choosing which one of these contemporary styled, vividly colored, detailed prints is the right one to engage you and your friends in a great fishing "Story" as real and full of adventure as the ones you tell. |

Rainbow and Steelhead SPAWNING, Breeding
Rainbow trout’s spawning behavior is similar to Atlantic salmon, although the trout will spawn in the spring. Young fish can remain in the stream where they were hatched for around 1-3 years and possibly up to 5 years, when they move downstream into larger water bodies to mature. Rainbow trout will start spawning in their fourth year, and do so several times in their lives.
Steelhead are born in fresh water streams and spend their first 1-3 years of life there, after which they migrate to the ocean where they spend between 1-4 years maturing in the ocean. They return to their native fresh water stream to spawn. Steelhead do not usually die after spawning, like Pacific salmon do, and spawn more than once in their life.
Most Northwest steelhead spawn from December through April in small streams and tributaries where there is lots of cool, well-oxygenated water available year around. The female chooses a site that has gravel or pebble substrates and there is good water velocity flowing through the gravel. This will keep the silt out and oxygenate the eggs. She will dig a nest, called a redd, which she deposits her eggs into and the male fertilizes. The eggs are covered by gravel and cobble stones by the female. .
Water temperatures affect the amount of time it takes for the eggs to hatch. Steelhead eggs generally hatch around 30 days if the temperature is around 50 degrees or so. The ideal temperature range is between 40-50 degrees F. If the water temperature is too high, the eggs will not hatch..
After hatching the new growing steelhead (alevins) stay in the gravel for 4-6 weeks, getting their food form the yolk sack that is attached to their bodies. When they come out of the gravel, the new fry is generally able to catch their own food. Young trout feed on insects and small crustaceans..
New fry will need to move to shallow, hidden or protected parts of the stream along the edges until they are older. They can be territorial and defend their area. As they get larger they will move out of the ripples to deeper pools, holes or areas with covers. |

FIND YOUR RETREAT
IN ART
We seek out retreats for ourselves in the country, by the seaside, on the mountain tops… but often it is there, we cannot physically travel. We must then go inside, our home, our offices, and retreat into ourselves, resting within our thoughts, and travel to our retreats in mind and spirit. Letting go of our pasts and bringing forward our futures, with hope and faith and goodness, for ourselves, and to bring back enough water from the well to share with others who have forgotten how to travel afar. Personal, memorable Corporate client gifts, employee gifts, customer appreciation gifts and new art series for new professional offices or remodeling office décor. |

This Year More Than Ever
Chosing the Right Personal Gift
is more important than ever.
Art’s purpose is to gratify us and satisfy our needs and desires. We not only need to express ourselves by decorating our homes and offices to create environments that are pleasing to us but we want to proudly show and share with others who we are and what’s important to us. It’s gratifying to us, and we anticipate the enjoyment others will receive and the attention our art will get by others as they find themselves taken in by the colors, the tone, the mood, the story.
You have great flexibility in choosing art that is attractive for it’s impact, expressing a point of view, the quality or style. We all want to belong and experience a connection with the thoughts and ideas that the art work presents, and have others join with us. It is very personal, the relationship that develops between a person and the art. We are attracted to scenes and settings that we can relate to, understanding the meaning and appreciate that we can identify with the art and the artist.
Art allows us to create, give and receive attention. All of us open ourselves to receiving compliments on our choices and can find it fulfilling that we own art that is fresh, real and unique. That becomes part of us and represents us. We can feel good when whenever we view it, comfortable with it’s statement, value, importance and significance. We commit to the art we buy and look forward to the rewards that it will bring us.

THE ARTIST and FISHING
There’s a Fish! LOOK, right there. Do you see it? It’s a Steelhead!
Anglers, like those I know including myself, have this unending need to scan the water to see if any fish can be spotted. You approach the water’s edge quietly, trying not to slip or make too much noise, scanning down into the water. Looking for shapes or differences in color or shadows that could be a fish, watching for any movements. The sun’s rays spreading wavy reflection across the top, making it a little more difficult to see. The wind or waves making their ripples that distort having a clear view. .
But you look, and look, and then you spot it. You want to show your find off, so you invite them to come look because it’s always much better if you can share your sighting with another person. But be quiet, don’t spook the fish. Look right, there, can you see it? It’s got to be a fish, right. You want them to see it too, if not to verify it’s truly a fish, to share this stolen moment where you get to be part of something so natural, wild, refreshing. This is serene excitement.
Sometimes you only get to see it for a second or two, as they quickly dart for cover because you’ve been spotted or someone comes rambling down to the shore or throw rocks into the water. But other times, they are there, definitely there, and you want them to stay around until you’ve had your fill. Now someone has to identify the fish, and then you start announcing their size. These are perfect times, and you wish that you could spend more time away, like this.
Once a fish has been spotted, fishing stories come easily about previous catches, or fun times spent with family and friends. Seeing fish or meeting up with another person that fishes, invokes a clear need to share and tell others about fishing outings and adventures, or great catches or humorous mishaps. It creates a common bond or thread that ties us all together. Fishermen and their friends can relate to the story, even if they have nothing else in common.
The telling of the weather, the water condition, the preparation to get there, the wait, the catch, the trials and errors, landing the King, losing the big one, missing the hardest strike, limiting out, out-fishing your buddy and describing the fish in detail along with every run made making your reel squeal or reeling in while it bent your pole almost in half, the fight with the head shaking, top water surface dancing, trying to wrap you around structure, the exhilarating, adrenaline rushing fight. The fish being an admirable opponent, as we try to tame and conquer it.
Close your eyes and believe.
Baslee Troutman wishing you healthy, happy and prosperous travels. |
