IDENTIFYING Each kind of salmon and trout (salmonid) are currently managed in each state with specific regulations on size, creel limits, and periods they may be caught (seasons). These Management policies require anglers to identify their catch correctly to apply the proper regulations. Two problems arise in correct identification of different types of salmon, steelhead and trout: (1) the name that many anglers use don’t match the proper or scientific name listed in regulations; and (2) some anglers, especially beginners, are not familiar with what the differences are between the fish in order to identify them correctly. Salmonids have fins with soft rays, except the adipose fin--a small, fatty fin located between the dorsal and tails fins--which has no rays. Fins of salmonids lack the stiff spines found on fins of some other fishes, such as sunfish and yellow perch. The dorsal fin is located midway on the back. The tail varies from being deeply forked on some fish to nearly squared on others. In summary, salmon and trout are smooth-scaled fish that have: (1) an adipose fin, (2) a large mouth with the jaw extending back beyond the eye, and (3) soft-rayed fins. |

ANADROMOUS Fish Coastal rainbow trout, will live in both fresh and salt waters. Steelhead and Salmon are an anadromous fish, hatched in freshwater then migrating to the ocean to mature and grow, and returning to their birthplace to spawn. The non-anadromous populations of that species are called rainbow trout. Steelhead and resident rainbow trout can give birth to offspring that may go to the sea or remain to live in the freshwater natural stream that they were born in. Steelhead and resident rainbow trout are basically indistinguishable when they are juveniles. If they are trapped behind man-made barriers without a means to pass through, such as a dam, they can easily revert back to being a freshwater fish. |

Steelhead Steelhead return to spawn in the stream or river where they were hatched. Fish from Oregon rivers do not usually interbreed with fish from other areas, like California. But over time, there has been some interbreeding and new strains have been identified and classified. Some are listed on the Endangered Species Act. It is suggested that Southern California steelhead are more tolerant of warmer water, meaning they want to manage them differently when considering water temperature tolerances but this has not been proven. |

The Salmon and There are three genera of Salmonidae: Salmo, Oncorhynchus, and Salvelinus. The American species of Salmo were originally split by the Mississippi basin, and had Atlantic salmon in the east and rainbow and cutthroat trout in the west. Steelhead trout are the silvery saltwater species of colorful rainbow trout. Rainbows and cutthroats have hybridize, which created a species called the Gila trout. The brown trout was introduced from Europe in the 1800’s. There are five species of Pacific salmon, found all the way from Southern California up to Alaska. They are important commercial and sport fishing species. The kokanee which spends it’s whole life in fresh water. The largest Pacific salmon, a Chinook, or ‘king salmon’ can average around 20 lb but may get as large as 100 lbs. There are Sockeye salmon in Oregon or redfish in Alaska which are blueback salmon. Pink pacific salmon, ‘humpback’ or ‘chum’ are the smallest. And ‘silvers’ salmon, also known as ‘coho.’ There used to be humpback salmon but they are rare. The Atlantic salmon is a member of the genus Salmo, an oceanic trout of the family Salmonidae. The Pacific salmon are found in the genus Oncorhynchus. The main biological difference between the Atlantic and Pacific ‘salmons’ is that Salmo may spawn more than once, and Oncorhynchus die soon after one spawn. The genus Salvelinus includes the various European chars, the common brook trout (speckled trout), the Dolly Varden (bull trout). There are other species like the lake trout and fat trout. A variety of trout have been known to interbreed with each other, creating many hybrid trout. |

Life Cycle The basic life cycle of the Salmonidae (salmon, steelhead, sea run trout) begins by the fish spending one to two years in freshwater, when it will travel downstream to the sea. There it grows to full size and returns when it matures, between 1-9 years old. It returns to spawn at the same watershed in which it was hatched. They endure many obstacles and have to fight hard for many miles to get upstream to their spawning sites. They start there journey being very fresh, and through the many grueling, tough miles they travel, they are no longer in prime condition from fighting currents, structures, falls, rapids and man made barriers. If they survive the sea and it’s many killers, they face being eaten on the way by predatory animals and being caught by freshwater sport fishermen and anglers. The ones that survive and arrive at their headwater spawning sites, will give the little energy they have left to building nests, defending them, spawning and then they die (salmon) or as some steelhead do, they may return to the sea. Landlock salmon, steelhead and trout can live and reproduce. |

ENDANGERED Because humans take the lives of Pacific Salmon in commercial over-fishing, land and watershed development, dam building, logging, and farm irrigation, their populations are endangered. Their numbers have significantly declined and many species are listed as rare or endangered. The United States and Canada negotiated a conservation agreement in 1999 that sets catch limits based upon assessments of salmon population levels but that doesn’t stop other countries form taking many fish during their migration while in international waters. Atlantic Salmon populations have also sharply declined. |

Water Temperature
Different species of fish have different ideal thermal needs and lower-to-upper temperature tolerances before it becomes harmful or lethal. All salmonids, which family includes salmon, trout, steelhead and char, fall in the middle range of these temperature tolerances. The temperature changes the activities of the fish, the amount it eats, it metabolic rate, and it’s oxygen consumption. Trout, salmon and steelhead can eat, hunt and survive at a variety of temperatures, whether they are daily or longer-term changes, but temperatures that remain too high or too low affects their health and ability to thrive. Optimal temperature ranges are necessary for their best growth and reproduction. Outside of these ideal ranges, freshwater sports game fish will experience stress, many will not grow and may not be able to reproduce. At the upper and lower thermal limits, a good portion of their population, if not all, of the trout, salmon and steelhead will die. |

STRESS FACTORS AFFECT SALMONIDS There are a number of factors that cause Fish stress or impair their health or ability to survive. A few factors are water temperature, oxygen levels (DO), amount and type of food available, habitat and depth, flow and cleanliness of water. Food availability, oxygen and water temperature will drive fish to rest or feed in different areas of water, and is a deciding factor on whether they need to hang out in a deep, cool hole during the hot day or have to be out in the main stream. These conditions will alter their metabolic rate, need for oxygen and will affect their rate of growth. Steelhead and rainbow trout, regardless of the temperature they have acclimated to, do not like living in water warmer than 22°C unless they have to move for food and better oxygen levels. Their metabolic rate increases as water temperatures rise. |

SEEING THE WORLD AS ART Baslee Troutman I catch myself framing landscapes or scenic scenes as they unfold. Imagining how it would look as a picture, wanting to capture it. Seeing it in pictures that can be designed. Capturing the feeling of the moment, the senses it ignited, the mood it created, with it's colors just right, the light, the symmetrical shapes, the flow, as if a frame could hold the theme in place. A way to remember a place and time, that would never be replicated. In that moment only, the movement, the motion, the time, the tones and color and light. Capturing places that balance you, that take you to that place that centers you. You feel the need, the desire to hold onto what moved you and carry the newly found inspiration. An expression of yourself. Holding time still. To share with others. With those whom matter most to you. Hoping they will see what only exists at that particular moment. Because it wont be replicated, just as it was ever again. Somehow, it would be forever lost if not recorded, at least in somebody's mind. It can be changed, rearranged, blending themes, placing different scenes together, overlaying them, organizing, removing flaws, blending colors, adding components. Taking the original and creating what has never been seen together before. A new Original. Only in your mind as it is created, thought by thought, stroke by stroke. So you too may travel, where I have, if only in my mind, to see what I see when I close my eyes and wander. Away from the realness of daily activities, beyond any harshness or sharp lines, outside of the structure, never minding the complicated lives we lead, looking away from approved procedures and processes that we are constantly required to follow. Look away and into a better place. Where there are only the rules you create. No demands, no critiques and all that matters is if it is pleasing to look at. Something that you would want to share with others. Seeing the evolution, evoking feelings and emotions, and senses, that take you to a place where you feel centered, where you can breathe better. A place where you can dream and anticipate having the best luck and good fortune. Finding sensations of calmness, wonder, awe, letting you follow your own story, whatever it is that you want to see, your creation. Following that path more than once, wandering, changing the ending or the meaning until it is what you would like it to be. Making it belong to you. You belonging to it. Close your eyes and believe. TROUT LOST – TROUT RETURN By the 1800, there were not many brook trout left in the Eastern US. It was not the introduced brown trout that completely endangered them, but people. After the civil war, cities sprang up everywhere, forests well cut down and rivers were used as logging runs. Brook trout, ‘little salmon of the fountain,’ had already lost their homes because of the lack of clear, cool, richly oxygenated waters they needed to flourish and survive. It was thought that Trout Fishing was coming to an end, and we would see the last generation of Trout fishermen. Brown trout were first brought over from Germany, England and Scotland. They were released into rivers from New England to the Rockies. It wasn’t long before they began to thrive. They grew big and fat, spawned well and muscled in on their brothers, the Brook trout, sending them fleeing from their home. Brown trout grew bigger than Brookies and they could survive better in the warmer waters. Brown trout turned out to be more ferocious, highly territorial, and drove many brook trout upstream into cleaner, clearer and colder waters. Before the 20th century ended, brown trout had taken control of many waterways and had invigorated sport fishing with new opportunities. Brook trout, in the East today, are reduced in number but live very well in the high, small tributaries, ponds and little rivers. Thousands of them were moved in the 19th century to replenish Eastern streams along with stocking new western waterways. Areas that never had brook trout before, now were populated with them. Brown trout, which are called intruders to the United States, affected the brook trout. In turn brook trout, intruders to the Western United States, affecting other native species where they were introduced. Introduced fish that take over native fishes territories and habitats, driving natives out, are called INTRUDERS. Which trout you like or whether you see them as invasive depends on where you live, and what you like to fish for. There are four major trout species in the US. Rainbow trout, brook trout (eastern) and cutthroat are native, only the brown trout is truly introduced from abroad. |

Invasive Trout Any species of trout is considered to be invasive, when you introduce it to another waterway, and it affects the native fish. Rainbow trout introduced from a Western State to an Eastern State, could be consider an intruder. And brook trout can be considered a pest in western trout fishing rivers. Brook trout have displaced other types of trout from their native habitat and endangered a few, such as the cutthroat trout. Cutthroat trout have at least 13 subspecies, which have evolved over many years and are specific to small regional habitats they have lived in. Two species are extinct and the others are in trouble. |

POISONING WATESHEDS to Return Natives The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) has declared that certain poisons are safe and can be used to rid areas of invasive fish, and restore the native fish. Brook trout, now abundant in some western watersheds, are being poisoned with fast acting compounds such as rotenone. It is said that it works and once dissipated, there are not lasting effects when the native trout are reintroduced to the stream, river or lake. Some Eastern creeks are being poisoned to get rid of rainbow trout and allow brook trout to return. There are many disputes about whether these poisons can be used safely. |

FISHERMEN WHO USE LIVE BAITS At a great expense to communities, tourist areas, resorts and taxpayes, many lakes and water ways have to be drained and poisons to get rid of "Garbage" fish that were introduced by people fishing with live baits. The use of live baits (minnows) allows fish species like chub to enter trout lakes and rivers, where they quickly multiply and take over ther watershed. The weaker species of trout will ultimately suffer and disappear. Many times the aggressive minnow species will overpopulate and cause algae blooms, further ruining water sports activities and freshwater sports game fishing, which hurts the surrounding tourist communities that depend on vacationers for a living. |

STEELHEAD ANGLING Steelhead offer you the thrill of fighting wild head shaking leaps out of the water, tail walking, and fast screaming runs. Fall Steelhead runs come just when they salmon runs are winding down and coming to an end. It’s breath-taking outdoors with the autumn leaves turning the landscape into a soft brilliant array of reds, oranges, yellows and purple leaves giving way to winter’s call. There are less people on the river, leaving you to chase the best prized game sport fish there is. Steady fall rains keep the river levels high so the fishing holes are deep. Steelhead are absolutely beautiful. They have terrific fighting skills. Landing one is a huge accomplishment and is a true trophy to talk about for many years. Even small ones will give you a huge fight and watching them dance across the water is quite an experience. One worth seeking and celebrating. Many West Coast rivers and steams have fall runs along with the tributaries of the Great Lakes, or other large lakes where steelhead have been planted. If you are just beginning, check in with your local bait shops and local fisherman to find out which rivers produce the biggest fish and the largest steelhead runs. Once you've picked out a river stream or two, through recommendation or experience, look for areas right behind salmon or trout spawning gravel. Steelhead are known for eating eggs and will wait right below spawning grounds for eggs to be washed free from the redds (nests). Or, look for deeper runs around riffles that have adequate structure will hold fish. In smaller streams, Downed trees, large rocks and undercut banks are all places where steelhead may be hiding waiting for prey as it swims by, unaware that a steelheas is waiting for the opportunity to make a surprise attack. Keep your eyes and ears open for the timing of the Steelhead run, it will vary from year to year, and area to area. A lot dependis on water conditions and water levels at any given time. But they do show up, moving up the river from around the end of the King Salmon season usually up until early spring. Most waterways stay open until the end of November or all year long. Check your fishing regulations. There’s plenty of opportunity to catch one for fly fishermen or spin reel anglers, both from the shoreline or from boats. |

STEELHEAD ATTACK Steelhead are very aggressive eaters, looking for flies, nymphs, eggs among other food sources. Having the right type and color of bait will increase your odds of hooking one of these good fighting fish. Colors that are hard to beat are fluorescent oranges, pinks and chartreuse. Some anglers choose colors that contrast with a mixture of black with orange or black with pink. Stock up, and be ready with a variety of colors. Steelhead respond to “Action” which triggers their instinctual drive to strike like a large predatory fish. Colors attrack them, certain natural looking materials get them excited, and metallic the metallic shine can cause them to bite hard. In the Spring, steelhead naturally eat nymphs whenever they can. The cold weather has caused a decrease in hatching insects, so every one becomes a needed treat. So if you are fishing with man-made nymphs, make sure they are the right size (smaller) and color for the natural hatches in that area, at that time of year. When steelhead stop looking for eggs as the year progresses, they will be more interested in nymphs. When you can see fish on the redds (nest), you’ll know that Steelhead are looking for eggs. You can drift single eggs or egg clusters. The fish will let you know what they prefer but it seems that the bigger the egg cluster, the better. Like having breakfast in one bite. Flourescent pink eggs work well. |

STEELHEAD TIMING Rain, water levels and sunlight affect fishing for steelhead. It pushes them up the river or impedes there progress and they stall out in areas waiting for more water. The river can rise and fall continuously. Mostly in the fall, there is steady rain which gives them access to run up the river at all times. In the fall months, sunlight might be rarer because the days can be mostly grey and wet, which is the ideal setting for fishing for steelhead. You’re less likely to spook the fish because the water is not clear and well lit. The rain will keep the river levels high and cause the fishing holes to be all the more deeper. Spring steelhead will actively chase down fast moving prey. Fall Steelhead are more like trout and salmon, waiting for their prey around cover or hanging our in deep holes waiting for prey to come by. You fish deeper in the fall to reach the steelhead. A PRIME EXAMPLE of TUI CHUB Diamond Lake has had to be poisoned several times now, over the years. Each time Tui chub (a type of minnow native to various river systems in the West) have overpopulated the beautiful lake below Mount Theilsen. The Rainbow Trout get huge at Diamond Lake from the abundance of insects that they feed on. They grow inches in a very short period of time during the heavy feeding season. Tui Chub are a fairly small omnivore (8-12 inches long) that love living in slow moving waters. They have a voracious appetite for the same type of insects that trout feed one. Tui chub reproduce quickly, laying thousands of eggs twice per year. When there are no predators, their population explodes and they harm other less predatory species. Once a lake is overpopulated with Tui Chub, you can see the effects by looking at the types of insects lying on the lakes bottom. Where you would normally find lots of insects like dragonfly nymphs, shrimp like scuds and leeches, you can now only find small blood-red worms. That is never a good sign, because the small worms can easily survie in low oxygen water or poor water quality. Diamond lake loses a huge amount of what they call ‘pounds of insects per acre of lake bed.’ Hundreds of pounds have been lost per acre when it was surveyed. Diamond Lake which is only a few miles north of Crater Lake National Park, does not have any native fish. The lake was stocked with Rainbow Trout and it become a Fishing Haven that drew thousands of fishermen over the years. Disappointingly, the lake had to be poisoned again. The belief is that the Tui Chub were introduced by fishermen using them as live bait that got lose and populated. It was known that they were multiplying quickly and the huge impact was becoming more apparent each year. The lake is somewhat shallow. Algae blooms and low oxygen levels show up and had a huge effect on the rainbow trout. So once again, the lake’s ecosystem is being brought back into balance where it will produce big trout, lots of them and very quickly. Great for Fishing and the surrounding communities that depend on people traveling to and vacationing at Diamond Lake. |

True greenback cutthroat trout were the victims of overfishing and trout hybridization. From the few trout that were found in Como Creek, many new greenback populations are now reintroduced in the Rocky Mountain National Park and it’s surrounding, protected national forests. Greenback Cutthroat are now the Colorado state fish. Anglers and fishermen can catch and release them. |

REPAIRING TROUT STREAMS Some state are closing their hatcheries and putting their money into improving the fishing system habitats. This way rivers will have cleaner water, less erosion, better cover from streamside vegetation and better spawning beds. Repairing trout streams is the main focus. They can plant trees for cover, creating cooler water, fencing off the water from the cattle so they don’t destroy the banks and have run off from their wastes. Without these efforts the water is polluted, warmer, and trout die. There are a number of restoration projects that are being undertaken across America. Some have stream enhancement that put in more narrow and deep channels in the creek to make it cooler, to repair what cattle have stopped flat and muddied up. You can also reroute the creeks and steams by lengthening them through added twists and turns and structure to reduce the velocity of the flow and allow sediment to deposit itself before reaching any strong currents. All of this will lower the water temperatures and increase the amount of oxygen. |

You approach the water’s edge quietly, trying not to slip or make too much noise, scanning down into the water. SEEING THE WORLD AS ART Baslee Troutman I catch myself framing landscapes or scenic scenes as they unfold. Imagining how it would look as a picture, wanting to capture it. Seeing it in pictures that can be designed. Capturing the feeling of the moment, the senses it ignited, the mood it created, with it's colors just right, the light, the symmetrical shapes, the flow, as if a frame could hold the theme in place. A way to remember a place and time, that would never be replicated. In that moment only, the movement, the motion, the time, the tones and color and light. Capturing places that balance you, that take you to that place that centers you. You feel the need, the desire to hold onto what moved you and carry the newly found inspiration. An expression of yourself. Holding time still. To share with others. With those whom matter most to you. Hoping they will see what only exists at that particular moment. Because it wont be replicated, just as it was ever again. Somehow, it would be forever lost if not recorded, at least in somebody's mind. It can be changed, rearranged, blending themes, placing different scenes together, overlaying them, organizing, removing flaws, blending colors, adding components. Taking the original and creating what has never been seen together before. A new Original. Only in your mind as it is created, thought by thought, stroke by stroke. So you too may travel, where I have, if only in my mind, to see what I see when I close my eyes and wander. Away from the realness of daily activities, beyond any harshness or sharp lines, outside of the structure, never minding the complicated lives we lead, looking away from approved procedures and processes that we are constantly required to follow. Look away and into a better place. Where there are only the rules you create. No demands, no critiques and all that matters is if it is pleasing to look at. Something that you would want to share with others. Seeing the evolution, evoking feelings and emotions, and senses, that take you to a place where you feel centered, where you can breathe better. A place where you can dream and anticipate having the best luck and good fortune. Finding sensations of calmness, wonder, awe, letting you follow your own story, whatever it is that you want to see, your creation. Following that path more than once, wandering, changing the ending or the meaning until it is what you would like it to be. Making it belong to you. You belonging to it. Close your eyes and believe.
